Morning Routine: Create - Introduction

For the next 21 days -- and beyond -- i'll spend at least a half an hour creating upon waking.  According to random articles on the internet, including this one, creativity peaks in the morning.

The definition of create is to bring something into existence.  Without individual effort and personal intervention, it never would've existed.  That's really enticing to me for some reason.

Anyways, i plan to bring something into existence each morning.  My current thoughts surround journal entries and bad ass breakfasts but i'm sure i'll come up with something more than that.

Challenge begins on Monday.

Morning Routine: Wake Up! - Conclusion

"Conclusion" is misleading as i'll continue to wake up before 6a.  Summary is a better term for this and the upcoming Morning Routine challenges.

Although i failed to wake up as early as planned, i was (and continue to be) awake long before i would've been had i not been attempting this new lifestyle.  I get a lot accomplished in the morning hours before departing to work and i'm looking forward to continuing the early-rising. For example, this week the latest i've been out of bed has been 6:20.

What's working for me is keeping my alarm on the other side of the room.  Strategically placed alongside the alarm is my robe.  The plush robe doesn't compare to the comfy bed but at this point it's closer.  I just tell myself to put on the robe and head downstairs.  I noticed that a lot of times when i faltered, it was because i would end up sleeping downstairs and didn't have the "robe trigger" in place.  See this post i wrote on a partner blog about triggers.

I'm also leaning on the hope that introducing more activity to my morning routine will be a catalyst to get out of bed.  Since each challenge will build upon one another, waking up at a proper time will start to be essential if i want to accomplish it all.

My next challenge is to create.  After waking and drinking a glass of water, i plan to spend around 35 minutes bringing something from nothing to life.  It could be a new blog post, it could be a journal entry, it could be a fantastic breakfast meal.  The opportunities are endless.  The only caveat is that it has to be something that wouldn't have existed without my intervention.  I want to jump start my creativity for the day that's unfolding.

I'll start next Monday and share as often as possible my a.m. creations.

Morning Routine: 21 Day Challenge - Wake Up - Days 16 thru 21

The "final" 5 days of the challenge.. Final is in quotes because, as i've mentioned before, i plan to continue to wake up early and start my day.  Here are the numbers:

Day 16 - 7:12a

Day 17  - 7:44a

Day 18 - 7:29a

Day 19 - 7:42a

Day 20 - 8:22a

Day 21(Sunday) - 8:51a

Sort of fell of the wagon as of late so i need to work on that.  Hoping that waking up to actually get stuff accomplished will help me get out of bed early moving forward.  I just found the warm bed way too enticing sometimes, and with "nothing to do" at 5:50am it was easy to sleep in.

However, i was out of bed by 6:10 this morning so i'm continuing the challenge as planned.

Morning Routine: 21 Day Challenge - Wake Up - Days 11 thru 15

The challenge has been difficult.  This weekend i had company making it nearly impossible to wake up at 6a because we weren't going to sleep until well after midnight.  Here's the stats:

Day 11 - Woke at 7:45 - had the great idea of keeping my phone (alarm) in the pocket of my robe thinking i'd put it on and get up..alarmed went off at 5:51, i walked downstairs and fell asleep on the couch.

Day 12 - Woke at 7:30

Day 13 - Slept until 9:10

Day 14 (Sunday) - Slept until 11:20. hate sleeping the day away.

Day 15 -  Woke at 7

I'm fairly confident that the reason i find it so hard to get out of bed is because i don't have anything to look forward to.  "Life itself" should be enough but apparently it isn't.  I'm not going to stop trying, though.

Morning Routine: 21 Day Challenge - Wake Up - Days 4 thru 10

My goal is to be out of bed by 5:51am each day.  Here's how i've faired during the challenge thus far:

Day 4 - hit snooze once, up by 6:09.  My g/f was surprised and excited to find me using the vacuum when she got out of the shower at 7:20.

Day 5 - up at 6:10

Day 6 - slept until 8:15 - first weekend morning of the challenge did not go as planned.  Was unable to fall asleep and then it carried over to the next morning.

Day 7 - slept until 7:35

Day 8 - slept until 6:20 - "slept in" but was still able to shovel the drive before work

Day 9 - slept until 7:40 - i tried napping after work so that i could stay up to watch the NCAA National Championship game.  I was unable to fall asleep and then i was unable to get out of the bed in the morning.

Day 10 - slept until 7:25

I have yet to wake up and actually stay up at the designated 5:51am wake up.  I'll need to make a change or two in these remaining days if i'm going to call this challenge a success.

Morning Routine: 21 Day Challenge - Wake Up - Days 1 thru 3

A solid morning routine can't be had without actually getting out of bed.  Initially, i reverse-engineered my morning starting with when i left for work and decided that i needed to be up by 6:10.  Only three days into the challenge and i'm already making changes.

I checked TimeAndDate.com and found that the earliest sunrise all year is 5:52am.  This occurs in June.  I want to beat the sun.  Therefore, i will begin waking up at 5:51 on a daily basis.

However, easier said than done.  So far the snooze has been my best friend. (and worst enemy)  Here's how the mornings have panned out so far:

Day 1: Alarm at 6:10, hit snooze until 6:40

Day 2: Alarm at 5:51, hit snooze until 6:30.  Woke up to a snow-covered driveway that i was able to shovel before i left for work.  Would have been impossible on a typical day when i'd sleep until i absolutely HAD to get up.

Day 3: Alarm at 5:51, hit snooze once and was out of bed by 6:10.  Was able to shovel the driveway and throw dinner in the slow cooker.

Although i haven't been up as early as planned, the extra time in the morning has made me more productive.  Hoping a "crash" isn't in my future.

Morning Routine: 2015

Happy New Year!

For the first half of the year i will develop a solid morning routine.  The morning routine  encompasses three areas of my life that i consider vital.  In completing these three things early in the morning, everything that i accomplish for the rest of the day is just a bonus.

When i previously tried to implement a routine, i tried to do it all at once.  The result was that it was never established.  This time i will go step by step, completing 21-day challenges along the way.  The end result is the new routine.

In creating the routine, i first asked myself the question, "what are the 3 most important things i could do each day to improve myself?"  Naturally, Mind Body and Soul came to mind.  These are the "internal" aspects of my six areas of focus.

For mind, i'll create.  Whether it be a blog post, 750words, an involved breakfast, or something else, i'll spend time creating each morning.

For body, i'll either exercise or prep meals.  The plan is to prep meals on Sundays and Wednesdays, strength train on Mondays and Thursdays, focus on mobility Tuesdays and Fridays, and do cardio on Saturdays.

For soul, i'll meditate.  I've yet to make meditation a habit so making it a part of a routine will help.

To come up with the actual routine, i started at the end and worked backwards.  In this case, it's 8:30am when i have to leave for work.  I then plugged in all the essential activities, including things like breakfast and getting ready for work.  It looks like this:
8:30 - leave for work
8:15 - work prep
7:55 - breakfast
7:45 - shower
7:00 - exercise or meal prep
6:25 - create
6:15 - meditate
6:10 - wake up

This routine is designed to work on the weekends too.  I plan to wake up at 6:10 and go about my day just like any other.  It's not until 8:15 that i will divert from the workday routine.

With that said, my first challenge is to wake up at 6:10 each morning.  I'll do one challenge per month.  The caveat is that unlike my previous challenges, these won't end after 21 days.  They'll build upon one another.  By May, the full routine will be in place.

The 6:10 alarm clock first rings on Monday.  Stay tuned.

Sleep Tracking - Conclusion

The sleep tracking challenge has come to an end and i wanted to share some takeaways.  Over the 21 days:

  • i averaged just under 9 hours and 15 minutes of sleep each night
  • most nights i woke up at least once
  • i drank caffeine throughout the 21 days, most were consumed at least 5 hours prior to sleep
  • although i planned to take ZMA, i only used it once because my stomach was rarely empty before bed
I'm pretty surprised as just how much i slept.  It was 193.2 hours total.  I'm curious as to how certain aspects of my life, namely diet, are affecting my sleep.  I hypothesize that if i eat cleaner my body will need less recovery time.  Although i don't plan to keep tracking my sleep, i will be more aware of the quality and quantity of my sleep.

Sleep Tracking - Days 14 thru 21

Here is the completed spreadsheet from my sleep tracking challenge.  (Again, the times are represented as decimals for mathematics sake and the asterisks mean that i used an alarm to wake up.)

The bed and wake times are represented in decimals.  For example, 2.25 is 2:15 and 6.75 is 6:45.  Over the first two weeks, i'm averaging 9 hours and fifteen minutes per sleep each night.

Sleep Tracking - Days 1 thru 5

Here's the data from the first 5 nights of sleep tracking.  Hopefully  by the end of this challenge i'll have a better understanding of my sleeping habits and patterns.

Further info:
  • In the bed and wake sections, 1.5 means 1:30, etc.  I work afternoon turns during the week so I typically stay up until at least 1 in the morning.  It's great not having to wake up to an alarm.
  • ZMA is a supplement that is said to help achieve deeper levels of REM sleep.  I have a couple of bottles but I haven't been using them for the challenge yet.
  • Wellbeing is on a scale of 1 - 5 where 1 is feeling terrible and 5 is feeling fantastic.  3 is normal.

Sleep Tracking - Introduction

For the next 21 days i will be tracking the amount of sleep i get each night.  Assuming that we sleep 8 hours a night, we'll spend 1/3 of our lives asleep!  That stat alone is reason enough to examine my sleeping habits.

After checking out this handy pdf from the National Institutes of Health, i put together a simple spreadsheet in Google Docs.  I will be tracking the approximate time of falling asleep and waking up, whether or not i woke during the night,  how many caffeine drinks i had during the day, and whether or not i supplemented with ZMA.  I'll also take a note of how i felt during the day.

I'll post at least twice per week with updates.

Litter - Conclusion

As if the lack of posts weren't enough indication, the 21 day litter challenge did not go as planned.  I did pick up other people's trash on most days, but other days i didn't even leave the house.  The lack of unemployment has taken a psychological toll.  I continue to remind myself that this is an opportunity, though.

Regardless, here are some of the photo uploads from the challenge:

Although the challenge wasn't necessarily a success, i cleaned up the neighborhood a bit.  Each piece helps.

I'll undertake a new challenge in September.  Stay tuned!

Litter - Days 2 and 3

I picked up a piece of trash yesterday, but i forgot to upload a pic.  It was one of those wrappers that you get with donuts. (in case you were interested)  Here's today piece of somebody else's trash that i picked up:

Litter - Day 1

Due to an unexpected job loss, the challenge is off to a late start.  However, it begins today.  Here's the first of 21 days of picking up somebody else's trash:
the Ripening, Picking up trash

Litter - Introduction

Inspired by the quote, be the change you wish to see in the world, for the next 21 days i'll pick up at least one piece of (somebody else's) trash.  I'll upload a picture of what i found.

I hope that this challenge will make me more aware of the trash around me and the amount of garbage that i contribute.

100 Pushups & Lunges - Days 19 - 21 & Conclusion

Sorry for the delay but I've been moving into a new home over the Memorial Day weekend and haven't had the time to blog or workout.  On the bright side, the move gave me plenty of opportunities to burn calories.

I did NOT do pushups and lunges on Days 20 and 21 (Saturday and Sunday) because I was full-throttle on the moving aspect.

Here are my sets and reps from the 19th day:

10:05 - 1 set of 35 pushups and 35 walking lunges
12:45 - 1 x 25
13:20 - 1 x 20
23:55 - 1 x 20

Although i stopped two days short, 1900 pushups and 1900 lunges is no joke.  Since I can't find my scale at the moment I'll have to pass on the body stats but it seems as though my chest is tighter and i have a greater capacity to do work.

I am not planning a 21-day challenge for the month of June as the g/f, puppy, and i need time to settle into our new space.

On the bright side, i already have a challenge lined up for July.

100 Pushups & Lunges - Days 16 - 18

18 days in, still going strong.  1,800 pushups and 1,800 lunges are behind me.  When i started, my form started to break down after 10 reps.  Now, i can easily do sets of 20.  It's not a feat but it's a measurable improvement.  Here are my sets and reps over the past 3 days:

Day 16
08:30 - 1 set of 20 pushups followed by 20 walking lunges
11:35 - 1 x 20
13:40 - 1 x 15
15:15 - 1 x 25
16:40 - 1 x 20

Day 17
08:45 - 1 x 20
12:15 - 1 x 20
14:00 - 1 x 20
15:25 - 1 x 20
16:05 - 1 x 20

Day 18
08:30 - 1 x 20
13:45 - 1 x 20
14:55 - 1 x 20
15:40 - 1 x 20
16:40 - 1 x 20

Just 300 more to go!

100 Pushups & Lunges - Days 13 - 15

The days are going by and the "workouts" are getting easier.  1500 pushups and 1500 lunges have been completed over the past 15 days.  Here are my sets and reps:

Day 13
10:20 - 1 x 25
22:00 - 1 x 25
22:30 - 1 x 25
23:30 - 1 x 25

Day 14
11:00 - 1 x 20
18:05 - 1 x 20
21:00 - 1 x 25
21:20 - 1 x 20
21:45 - 1 x 15

Day 15
08:30 - 1 x 20
10:00 - 1 x 20
11:50 - 1 x 20
13:10 - 1 x 20
15:20 - 1 x 20

100 Pushups & Lunges - Days 9 - 12

The challenge has continued without incident.  Still going strong.  Here are updates from the past four days:

Day 9
08:40 - 1 set of 10 pushups and walking lunges
09:55 - 1 x 10
10:45 - 1 x 10
11:50 - 1 x 10
13:00 - 1 x 10
13:15 - 1 x 10
16:15 - 1 x 10
18:25 - 1 x 10
18:45 - 1 x 10
19:00 - 1 x 10

Day 10
08:35 - 1 x 10
09:35 - 1 x 10
10:30 - 1 x 10
12:00 - 1 x 10
13:05 - 1 x 10
13:20 - 1 x 10
15:30 - 1 x 10
16:30 - 1 x 10
16:45 - 1 x 10
18:35 - 1 x 10

Day 11
08:40 - 1 x 10
10:05 - 1 x 10
10:20 - 1 x 10
14:05 - 1 x 10
15:00 - 1 x 10
16:05 - 1 x 10
18:30 - 1 x 10
18:55 - 1 x 10
20:05 - 1 x 10
21:45 - 1 x 10

Day 12
08:30 - 1 x 10
09:00 - 1 x 10
09:45 - 1 x 10
10:35 - 1 x 10
12:25 - 1 x 10
13:15 - 1 x 10
15:00 - 1 x 10
15:20 - 1 x 10
15:40 - 1 x 10
16:05 - 1 x 10

Although i don't know whether or not this is more beneficial than doing everything in one chunk, it's nice to see the reps rack up throughout the day.  After all, i've done 1,200 pushups and 1,200 lunges in the past 12 days.  Can't say that i've ever done that before.
